Making Canvas Exams More Secure, a Path Forward 🐾
Below are suggested actions to increase your confidence using quizzes without proctoring tools.
Canvas has two different Quiz​ tools,​ ​Quizzes (aka classic)​ and New Quizzes. New Quizzes is still being developed​​; at this time it has both advantages and limitations​.​ We acknowledge some STEM courses are using New Quizzes in ​Canvas​. The​ guides ​below are ​for both ​"classic" ​Quizzes and New Quizzes​.

• Availability – Restrict the availability of the test to a specific date/time range. Quizzes | New Quizzes
• Time Limits – Limit or expand the time a student can spend on a test once they start it. Quizzes | New Quizzes
• Delay Per-Question Feedback (Quizzes only) – Providing students feedback on each question can help them learn; delaying the availability of this feedback until after the test availability window is over can help ensure the integrity of the exam. Quizzes
• Answer Scramble – Answers to multiple choice questions can be shuffled so they are presented differently for different students. (Note: In Quizzes this is one setting for the entire quiz; in New Quizzes this is a per-question setting.) Quizzes | New Quizzes
• Shuffle Questions – This will present the quiz questions to students in random order. For Quizzes, you can create groups and shuffle them. New Quizzes
• Use a test bank that randomly draws questions from a large bank – Drawing questions randomly from a pool can make it even more difficult for students to share questions during an exam. Quizzes | New Quizzes
• Calculated (Formula) Questions – Formula questions can include a range of values for one term/variable. Thus, the same question will have unique answers across different quizzes, but the question can still be auto-graded. Quizzes | New Quizzes

Making Canvas Exams Less Stressful

• Make the exam timed (or untimed) and "open book" — they may use the course materials to help find answers to the questions.
• They may exit the exam during their attempt. Their answers will be saved and they can resume at a later time.
• They may take the exam multiple times, and only the highest score will be recorded
